Learn how to wash a waterproof blanket with the tips in this article. Proper washing preserves Banana Passion Waterproof Blankets, extending the blankets’ life for uses like intimacy, pets, or picnics. Our blankets feature a TPU (polyurethane) membrane sandwiched between soft fabric layers, which protects surfaces underneath from spills while staying comfortable and machine-washable. That layer is sensitive to heat and aggressive detergents, so this article tells you how to clean your blanket and keep it in good condition.

The inner TPU layer is thin to stay flexible, but harsh washing degrades the membrane. Over time, as it deteriorates, it goes from waterproof to merely water-resistant. Washing with mild detergents while avoiding high heat keeps the TPU membrane in good condition for as long as possible. Always check the care label first for the advised limits, although generally we advise that our blankets are best washed at relatively low temperatures of 30-40°C (85-105º F). For light use, that should be enough to keep your blanket clean and fresh. Heavier use, or when the blanket gets really dirty, may require a little more care.

If any solid debris or dirt got into the blanket, begin by shaking the blanket to remove debris, pet hair, or dust (you’ll probably want to do this outside). You can use a lint roller to remove stubborn bits. Spot-treat stains with enzyme cleaners for organic messes or mild oxidisers for set-in marks, but avoid bleach. Pre-soak heavily soiled blankets in cold water with mild detergent for 15-20 minutes.
Wash by itself on a normal cycle with water at a maximum of 40°C (105º F) and mild liquid detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, bleach, or excess soap to prevent residue buildup. In particular, for our thicker Velvety Waterproof Blankets, you can run an extra spin cycle to remove trapped water from the fleece layers. This will reduce drying time.
Fill a basin with cold water and 1 tablespoon of mild detergent per 4 liters (approx. 1 gallon); submerge and agitate gently, and scrub stains with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly by pressing (but never wringing, as that could damage the TPU layer) until water runs clear.
Air dry flat in the shade to avoid UV fading and stretching, flip periodically for even drying. You’ll find that our QuickDrying Waterproof Blanket range lives up to its name, with good drying time comparable to regular clothes. Velvety Waterproof Blankets, owing to their thicker flannel fleece layers, will require more time and will benefit from flipping over.

Our waterproof blankets can be tumble-dried. Tumble dry on low/no heat with dryer balls for up to 30 minutes; do not run longer or hotter to prevent overheating and damaging the membrane.
Ensure the blanket is fully dry before storing to avoid mould and build up of unpleasant smells.
Neutralise odours by adding a tablespoon of bicarbonate soda (bicarb) for odour control. Occasionally, you can use about 30 mls of vinegar while rinsing to keep odours away.
Test waterproofing performance by sprinkling water: if no water leaks through on the other side, you’re all good! If some water leaks through, either rightaway or after some time, it’s a sign the TPU waterproof membrane is wearing out. While all good things come to an end eventually, follow the tips in this article to keep that moment away for as long as possible.
Follow these guidelines to keep your blanket leakproof for years!
